Villa Castelnuovo
Villa Castelnuovo - Neoclassical Gymnasium & Verdura Theater
Villa Castelnuovo represents a perfect synthesis of nature, art, and history. Its transformation began after 1768 under Gaetano Cottone e Morso, who turned it into a field for experimental cultivation. His son Carlo continued his work, founding the pavilions of the Institute for Agricultural Sciences in 1819.
The heart of the villa is the Gymnasium, a neoclassical masterpiece by architect Antonio Gentile. Characterized by pure and essential lines, the rectangular building is embellished with a majestic portico featuring eight Doric columns. At its center rises a dome finely frescoed by Michele Varrica.
The Gymnasium is reached via a picturesque cypress-lined avenue that starts from the 18th-century entrance, flanked by pillars with stucco statues symbolizing Abundance and Agriculture. The park, with a second entrance on Viale del Fante, is home to splendid Italian-style gardens, fountains, and valuable sculptures, including the prominent "Music" group (1777) by Ignazio Marabitti.
Today, this magnificent garden hosts the Teatro di Verdura, the open-air stage for the summer season of the Teatro Massimo of Palermo.
