Giacomo Serpotta: Il Genio dello Stucco Barocco e le sue Opere a Palermo

Esplora la vita e le opere di Giacomo Serpotta, il maestro dello stucco siciliano.

Giacomo Serpotta: The Sacred Theater of Stucco
Giacomo Serpotta (1656-1732) is universally recognized as the greatest master of the art of stucco in the European Baroque.
Working primarily in his native city of Palermo, he revolutionized the use of this material, elevating it from a simple decorative element to the protagonist of complex and scenographic sculptural narratives.
His unmistakable signature is the "allustratura" technique: a special finish made of lime and marble dust that gave his sculptures a pearly luster, similar to that of marble itself.
This technique allowed light to glide over the surfaces, endowing the figures with extraordinary vitality and lightness.
Serpotta's style is a triumph of dynamism and grace. His most famous works are the oratories of Palermo (Santa Cita, San Lorenzo, San Domenico), where the walls come alive with a "sacred theater" Biblical scenes are surrounded by a whirlwind of allegorical figures, garlands, and, above all, his famous putti: irreverent, playful, or melancholic cherubs, depicted in countless poses that express the full range of human emotions.
His work not only defined the Sicilian Baroque but also anticipated the airy elegance of the Rococo style.
