Mondello
Mondello is a fishing village , reclaimed only at the end of the 19th century, thus allowing the arrival of the upper middle class of Palermo and of the Italo-Belgian society which transformed it into a seaside lounge with belle époque air.
As part of the VII District , enclosed by < strong> Monte Pellegrino and Monte Gallo , detached from the city by the Parco della Favorita , can be reached via the many tree-lined royal avenues or via secondary connections.
The area is renowned for the beach, which represents one of the most coveted beaches in Sicily, for its numerous Liberty style villas, known as the best expression of Art Nouveau in Italy, and for the sites of historical interest.
It is home to the World Festival on the Beach .
The village of Mondello - about 12 km from the urban center of Palermo and separated from the rest of the city by the Parco della Favorita - lies on a semicircular bay whose ends are Monte Pellegrino in the south-eastern side and Monte Gallo in the north-western one.
The natural reserves of the two promontories offer exceptional landscape diversification, which represents one of the most important peculiarities of the place.
It can be reached via the tree-lined avenues of the Favorita or by crossing the promenade of the Addaura .
Mondello enjoys a typically Mediterranean climate. Summers are hot and with little rain, but with low humidity levels.
Thanks to the continuous Mediterranean and Tyrrhenian breezes, the days are often windy: the only exception is the weeks in which the Scirocco blows, which brings the temperatures to decidedly high values, also raising the humidity level.
Most of the rainfall is concentrated in the first days of September, while in the rest of the autumn, sunny days and very pleasant temperatures continue to follow.
Winters are generally mild, but despite the Mediterranean influence, in the last few years during the winter months temperatures can reach around 5 ° for several weeks.
Very rarely the beach of Mondello (as well as the other Tyrrhenian municipalities of Sicily) can be whitewashed by a thin but suggestive layer of snow. The last snowfalls were those of 30 and 31 December 2014.
The springs are lukewarm (except in March and, at times, in early April when cold broadsides can still arrive from the Balkans) and normally as early as the second half of April and the beginning of May temperatures remain high.
