Known for the famous painting by Renato Guttuso, which in 1974 has immortalized the Vucciria Market, this outdoor market is undoubtedly one of the most famous of the city.
It is located in the heart of Piazza Caracciolo, a step away from the Cala, the largest marina in the city. For this reason, this market is characterized by the passage of many merchants from Genoa, Pisa and Venice; so the streets around the market take the name from the artisan classes that worked there: via dei Chiavettieri, via dei Materassai, via dei Tintori etc.
Vucciria means "voices" or "hubbub" from French "boucherie", a synonym for "confusion". Here you will find butchers, fishmongers, greengrocers and street food stalls.
As the Vucciria Market, also the Capo Market colors and animates one of the oldest areas of the city, stretching from the Cassaro to the reclaimed area of the Papireto River.
Here you can still find the ancient crafts of the city in the deafening "abbanniata" (cries of vendors of meat, fish, etc.).
Around the market, it extend some of the major attractions of the city: in the southern border of Corso Vittorio Emanuele is the Cathedral of Palermo; the northern one is dominated by the Teatro Massimo.
The market extends from Piazza Casa Professa to corso Tukory towards Porta Sant’Agata.
The market is famous for the sale of fruits and vegetables that come from the countryside of Palermo. Ballarò is the oldest markets in the city, attended by hundreds of people, animated by the so-called "abbanniate".
The loud cries of vendors try to attract the interest of passers-by with their distinctive and colorful local accent.
In Ballarò Market, fruits, vegetables, meat and fish are common, but there are also articles of domestic use for cooking and cleaning the house, as in the markets of Capo and Vucciria.
